Choosing the right ammo

Choosing the right ammunition can mean life or death, it’s not as simple as just stock piling cheap crappy ammunition and hoping that it will be enough bullets to save you. Not having a sighted, accurate weapon with reliable ammunition that you know will hit the target where you are aiming and not be saying hi to random Joe on the other side of town.

Not all bullets are created the same.

They all perform very differently upon impact with an animal so selecting a bullet is extremely important. You need to choose a bullet that will perform in a manner that meets your personal preferences. Do you want it to come apart on impact? Stay together on impact? Do you need a lead-free bullet? A lead tip, a hollow point, or a polymer tip? You can read up on different bullets and their applications below. Bullet Construction
lead-free bullet

Lead-free bullets are commonly made from copper or a copper alloy. Their solid construction generally provides high weight retention and deep, controlled penetration while avoiding lead fragments in harvested meat. They are also required in some hunting areas. Because copper is less dense than lead, a lead-free bullet of the same weight is usually longer and may perform best with a barrel twist rate and velocity suited to that particular design.

Traditional exposed-lead soft-point bullets place a soft lead tip ahead of the jacket. On impact, the exposed tip helps start expansion while the jacket controls how quickly the bullet opens. These bullets are widely used for hunting because they offer a familiar balance of expansion, penetration, and cost, although their tips can be deformed during handling or recoil in a magazine.

A hollow-point bullet has an opening in its nose, but not every hollow point is designed for the same purpose. Hunting and defensive designs may use the cavity to begin controlled expansion, while many match hollow points are shaped primarily for accuracy and may not be intended to expand reliably. Always check the manufacturer’s stated application instead of judging performance by appearance alone.

Polymer-tip bullets use a pointed synthetic insert to protect the nose and improve the bullet’s aerodynamic shape. In many hunting designs, the tip is driven into the bullet on impact to help initiate expansion. Polymer tips can provide a higher ballistic coefficient and more consistent feeding than an exposed lead tip, but construction varies from rapidly expanding varmint bullets to tougher, controlled-expansion big-game bullets.
